The world of work is changing faster than ever. New technology is transforming how we do our jobs, boosting efficiency and productivity across industries. But while companies reap the benefits, too many workers are still stuck in outdated patterns; long hours, high stress, and too little time for themselves or their families.
That’s why the CWU is campaigning for a shorter working week with no loss of pay. And our members are backing us every step of the way.
What you told us
You might remember the survey you were asked to complete, 1,000 of you took part and the results were clear:
- 92% said working fewer hours for the same pay would reduce stress.
- 86.5% said their job satisfaction would improve.
- 93% said their physical health would improve
- 93% said they’d be more likely to stay with their employer if they had a shorter week.
- Nearly 2,000 members are already prepared to talk to colleagues to help drive this campaign forward.
This isn’t just about workers, it’s about employers too. Evidence from a major UK pilot showed:
- Burnout down 71%
- Sick days down 65%
- Revenues up 35% on average compared to previous years
- 92% of companies kept the 4-day week after the trial
The message is simple: a shorter working week benefits everyone.
What would you do with more time?
When we asked you, how they’d use the extra day, the answers spoke volumes:
- Spend more time with family and care for loved ones
- Focus on health and exercise
- Take up hobbies and personal development
- Give back through volunteering
This campaign isn’t about doing less, it’s about living more. We work to live. Happier, healthier workers are more productive, more creative, and more likely to stay with their employer for the long term.
Momentum is building
This isn’t just a dream. Around the world, more employers are trialling and adopting shorter working weeks with no loss of pay. Politicians are taking notice too, from Bernie Sanders in the US to MPs here in the UK calling for further trials. The tide is turning.
Together, we can win
But let’s be clear: change won’t happen unless we make it happen. For all the evidence we can show, it’s the voices of our members that make the difference. The more of us who get involved talking to colleagues, sharing information, and encouraging others to join the CWU, the stronger our campaign becomes.
Now is the time. Let’s make the shorter working week a reality for our health, for our families, and for the future of work.
