Our History

Building Union Strength Across London’s Communications & Financial Services

Decades in empowering workers

About the CWU

CWU Capital’s story is rooted in the long history of trade unionism within the communications industry, stretching back over a century. From the early days of the Post Office and telecommunications, to the digital age of mobile networks and financial services, our members have always been at the heart of major industries and we’ve always stood up for their rights.

Our branch was formed as part of the Communication Workers Union (CWU), which itself was created in 1995 when the Union of Communication Workers (UCW) and the National Communications Union (NCU) joined forces. This merger brought together workers from the postal, telecoms, and technology sectors into one powerful collective voice..

As industries across London and the UK have modernised, so has our union. CWU Capital represents over 2,600 workers across companies such as BT, Openreach, Virgin Media, Capita, Santander, and more — reflecting the evolution from traditional communications to a broader digital, financial, and service-based economy.

Our members work in a wide range of roles, from engineering and customer service to financial administration and call centres. Through all the changes, our mission has remained the same: to protect, support, and empower workers in every corner of our sector.
