Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most commonly misunderstood neurodevelopmental conditions. You’ve probably heard of it but too often it’s oversimplified as just being “easily distracted” or “hyperactive.”
The truth is, ADHD is far more complex. For those living with it, the challenges and strengths are deeply personal and often shape how they experience life and work.
At CWU Capital, we’re here to raise awareness, support our neurodivergent members, and ensure everyone has the right adjustments and understanding to thrive at work.
What Is ADHD?
ADHD affects how people regulate attention, impulses, and energy levels. It’s often diagnosed in childhood, but it can continue into adulthood.
There are three main types:
- Inattentive type (formerly ADD): difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, disorganisation
- Hyperactive-impulsive type: restlessness, impulsivity, excessive movement or talking
- Combined type: a blend of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive traits
It’s Not About Lazines
People with ADHD are sometimes unfairly labelled as lazy, careless, or disruptive. In reality, ADHD is linked to differences in how the brain manages executive functions — things like planning, memory, and emotional regulation.
Understanding that is key to creating inclusive and supportive workplaces.
The Strengths of ADHD
ADHD doesn’t just bring challenges — it also brings unique strengths:
1. Creativity & innovation: Out-of-the-box thinking and problem-solving
2. Hyperfocus: Deep concentration on topics of passion
3. Resilience: Adapting and thriving in environments not built for neurodiverse minds
Support and Strategies
Managing ADHD may involve a mix of:
- Diagnosis and medical support from GPs or specialists
- Therapies like CBT, coaching or occupational therapy
- Practical tools like planners, focus apps and assistive technology
